Sunday August 18th Bookbinding with Dan Shafer
Dan D Shafer is the best book designer I know. He designed both of my Farm Food cookbooks, and I credit their success entirely with his design work. They are beautiful books because of his innate sense of design. And he will return to the farm this summer for a bookbinding class. I am thrilled.
I highly recommend this class. It is the most hands-on of all the classes and you will go home with a sewn folio book by the end of the day. The book you make will be the ideal small journal or sketchbook or photo album.
At his workshop we will each bind a hardcover book, hand-sewing the book and finishing it with a cloth spine and cover. We will make a sturdy 5-1/2” x 6-1/2” 96-page book with heavy sketchbook paper. You will be able to customize your book with a variety of cover finishing materials and options. If you’ve ever wanted to learn the basics of bookbinding and get to know the tools required, this is a way to learn and get familiar with bookcloth, linen thread, beeswax, decorative paper, bonefolders, folded signatures, and endpapers. Dan will intersperse information about other bookbinding formats and techniques, and show examples from his 20 years of teaching bookbinding at Cornish College of the Arts as well as his professional work as a book designer.
Dan D Shafer is a Seattle-based graphic designer, artist, and educator. He owns Dandy Co., a graphic design studio specializing in book design, environmental design, and event branding and promotion. He is currently redesigning the permanent exhibit at the Vashon Heritage Museum. Dan also teaches design classes Cornish College of the Arts.
